PWID 2016: The Extras

You must be an SCBWI member to take advantage of EXTRAS. You may sign-up and (where applicable) purchase your EXTRA (s) when you register. There are no refunds of EXTRA fees.

PAL Marketing Consultations: $175 

Kirsten Cappy of Curious City will offer a limited number of discounted one-on-one marketing consultations to 2016 PWID SCBWI PAL member attendees, post-conference.  That $175 consultation (normally $250) will include a full read of your title, a 45-60 minute one-on-one marketing conversation and a follow-up report of recommended outreach for your title. Written Manuscript Critique: $40

A limited number of written manuscript critiques by both on-site and off-site editors and agents are available to SCBWI members. Critiques are purchased when you register. Your manuscript hardcopy should be mailed within 24 hours and manuscripts submitted must conform to the guidelines. Mailing instructions and guidelings are listed on The Guidelines page, to the right, in the light lavender box. There are no refunds for Extras; that includes manuscripts that arrive late or do not conform to the guidelines.

Critiques will only be available on the registration form through September 20th but may sell out earlier. The Off-site Critiquers are listed under Adjunct Faculty at the bottom of the PWID 2016 Faculty page. Critiques are written only and will be available at the conference on November 5th. You may only register for one Manuscript Extra, the critique or the contest.

Wait list for Written Manuscript Critique: In the event that critiques sell out before the September 20 deadline, a wait list will go into effect. Please see The Guidelines page, to the right, in the light lavender box.

Manuscript Contest: no extra charge

SCBWI Members are eligible to enter one manuscript in the Prairie Writer's and Illustrator's Day Contest. You must be registered before mailing in your manuscript, and indicate on the registration form that you are entering the contest. The first 50 manuscripts hardcopies to be received by mail will be judged by agent Linda Pratt. Registration does not guarantee entry. No contest manuscripts will be accepted after October 1st

The winner and one runner-up will be awarded a written critique and will be announced at Prairie Writer's & Illustrator's Day. The winner will also receive a 30-minute one-on-one chat with Ms. Pratt on the day of the conference. You may only register for one manuscript extra, the critique or the contest. All manuscripts submitted must conform to the guidelines (see The Guidelines page, to the right, in the light lavender box).

Portfolio Review:$40

A limited number of face-to-face portfolio reviews are available to SCBWI members. Each review will be 10 minutes and conducted with either Giuseppe Castellano, Jordan Kost, or Don Tate. There are no refunds for cancellation.

Portfolio Showcase: no extra charge

Members attending the conference are invited to display their illustration portfolio during the Mix & Mingle. Space is limited so registration is required and portfolios must not exceed the size limits listed in the guidelines. You may also display one book dummy and promotional cards with your porfolio. Please follow the portfolio guidelines (see The Guidelines page, to the right, in the light lavender box).

Art Contest: no extra charge

Member illustrators are eligible to enter one piece of art based on the prompt:

Reveal your Identity!: Who are you? Whether you’re mild-mannered or super-powered, each illustrator has his/her own identity. You may be a wizard with watercolor; a god with gouache; a force with Photoshop; or a Martian with mark-making. Show your identity in a NEW illustration of your choosing. The only rule is that the illustration must be within a 10 inch x 10 inch space. Good luck.”

Create, scan and adjust your piece so it fits into a 768 x 768 pixel format.  Send jpeg to Janet McDonnell at by September 25.  No late entries accepted. You will receive a confirmation receipt email.

Executive Art Director Giuseppe Castellano will judge the contest. The top three winners will be announced at the conference and be featured on the SCBWI-IL website. The first place winner will also win a gift certificate to Dick Blick’s.

Postcards: no extra charge

For Member Illustrators: to make sure the attending faculty receives your sample postcards, we will prepare special packets for their folders.  To be included, send 10 postcards to Janet McDonnell at 1322 N. Vail Ave., Arlington Heights, IL 60004. Send postcards no later than October 29th.
