Donations of Diverse Books

This year, Prairie Writer’s and Illustrator’s Day is continuing our tradition of collecting book donations, but with a new focus! The past few years have brought increased attention to the need for diverse books in children’s publishing. All children deserve to see themselves in their favorite stories. To further this mission, we are asking our generous SCBWI members to bring a diverse book for donation. (Please see this link for We Need Diverse Books’ definition of “diversity”: http://weneeddiversebooks.org/mission-statement/ The books collected will be donated to Perkins Bass Elementary, a school serving kindergarten through 8th grade students on the South Side of Chicago.

Diverse Members and Allies Meet & Greet

SCBWI-IL is committed to making our community a more inclusive and diverse one.  This PWID, we invite you join us for a lunch hour Meet & Greet where we’ll listen to your thoughts on what's needed for diverse members to feel comfortable within our Chapter, share ideas we've been developing, and invite you to suggest ideas too. All are welcome.

Auction of John Parra’s “Frida”

Come to the Diverse Members and Allies Meet & Greet where everyone is invited to view John Parra’s “Frida”.  The original painting, gifted at his 2016 Los Angeles Conference Workshop, will be auctioned after PWID to raise funds for SCBWI-Illinois’ ongoing diversity initiatives.

Wear your SCBWI-IL Diversity Initiatives Button

Show your commitment to making our Illinois Region a more diverse and inclusive one by donning a SCBWI-IL Diversity Initiatives button! These buttons, donated by a generous member, have a graphic designed by Cedric Gliane and will be available at 2016 PWID Check-in for a donation of $1.  Proceeds will go to our SCBWI-Illinois diversity initiatives.

Announcing the SCBWI-IL Diverse New Member Pathway

In 2017 SCBWI-IL will offer an opportunity for members of diverse groups to apply for a free, 1-year membership in SCBWI-IL.  More details at PWID!
