PWID 2019: Diversity Initiatives

Diversity Social:

During lunch there will be a Diversity Social, during which diverse members and allies can connect, share experiences, and generate ideas regarding future diversity programming for SCBWI-IL. No need to sign up in advance — just join in!


2019 SCBWI-IL Diverse New Member Pathway:

6 writers or illustrators with different shades of skin tones, including 1 wearing an LGBTQ+ Pride rainbow scarf & one with a Seeing Eye dog, all moving among giant books. 2019 SCBWI-IL Diverse New Member Pathway
SCBWI-Illinois’ Diverse New Member Pathway, intended to increase diversity among children’s book creators and members of SCBWI, is in its third year.  Free application is open to any Illinois children’s writer/illustrator with a diverse background, who has never been an SCBWI member.  With a new prize for 2019, winner Samina Hadi-Tabassum has received a one-year SCBWI membership, a scholarship to 2019 Prairie Writer’s and Illustrator’s Day Conference and a manuscript critique or portfolio review at the conference.  Look for new information about the SCBWI-IL 2020 Diverse new Member Pathway in Winter 2020.

KidLit Nation Scholarships:

PWID 2019 is partnering with the not-for-profit KidLit Nation, whose mission is to help educate and provide opportunities for diverse children’s writers and illustrators of color and connect them to resources and opportunities from around the publishing industry. 

KidLit Nation is generously funding up to 5 scholarships for PWID 2019.
